Ernie

Ernie guards horses full-time at Island Farm. He is a great example of the breed, a working guardian, who leaves the pasture only to take a shower and show up at a show for as long as it takes to make a good impression and then he is ready to go back to work. This is what Ernie's owner Debi says about him:

"When we lived in Wisconsin the coyotes were very, very aggressive. I never had an animal hurt while Ernie was on guard. One night, however, he came in with his back leg severely mauled (down to the bone) from fighting off the coyotes. The same night one of my other dogs also came in with puncture wounds. We thought Ernie was going to lose his leg (he didn't and he is fine now). That same evening with a bandage on and unable to put weight on the leg he heard the coyotes sounding and almost went through a window trying to get outside to get them."
