Ishka, Great
Pyrenees
It was love at first sight when I first saw
this big, shaggy white dog in the lost and found
section at the Animal Foundation. I was a
volunteer walking dogs, when I first saw her. I
had to go and take a closer look.
The staff told me that her time in lost and found was
up the next day. Due to her age, I was afraid she
wouldn’t be considered for adoption. She was estimated
to be about 10 years old. I asked them not to euthanize
her, because I wanted her. So the next day I brought her
home.
We soon realized that she was sick; she could barely
breathe, and I also noticed that she couldn’t hear. I
truly thought she wouldn’t live much longer. A visit to
the vet, antibiotics, thyroid medication, love and good
food helped her to recover. And soon we would go for
short walks around the neighborhood.
Ishka adjusted well to our household. My other two
dogs accepted her into the family and I just truly fell
in love with this gentle giant. Not being able to hear
me, we worked on hand signals. She has enough hearing
left to hear the sound of the clicker or a whistle, which
helps a lot. With Ishka I learned a lot about using
supplements to enhance the overall well-being. She is
very arthritic, and with the help of supplements,
chiropractic and acupuncture we have managed to maintain
mobility for almost 3 years now. We still go on daily
walks to the park, she still enjoys making new friends,
four legged and two legged alike, and she is just a joy
to have around. I will never understand why someone would
abandon such a wonderful dog.
Sadly I had to
put my beloved Ishka to sleep on Thanksgiving 2001. We miss her so
much, and I am grateful that she has been part of my life.
